For Tamariki & Rangatahi

I’m coming in for a medical appointment.

What should I expect?

Before your appointment

You have been referred to Te Puaruruhau because you, your whānau, or someone else is concerned someone may have hurt or harmed you. You or your caregiver/parent will have been contacted by a member of the clinical team to arrange a day and time that fits in around you and your day.

If you have any questions before your appointment, need help with getting here (ie. taxis that we can provide), or need to cancel or change the appointment day or time, please call 021 492 365.

You can absolutely bring a support person with you.

At your appointment

You will be seen by a nurse, doctor or health social worker, or a combination of these team members. They will explain who they are and their roles, how the appointment might look, how long it might take, and give you a few options to help you decide on what you want for your health and well-being. They will talk about your confidentiality and the limits around this.
You will spend at least a few minutes on your own with one of these people as there are some personal and private questions you may be asked.
Some of the things that might be offered may be a blood test, sexual health screening and education, contraception information, physical examination, ACC claim and clinical photography.
If you have any health worries about your body please share these with the medical team.

We have kitchen facilities and kai available, and your support person can be with you for as much of your appointment as you are comfortable with.

After your appointment

If you had anything sent off to the lab for testing, the nurse will contact you in a few days after your appointment to give you these results. A follow up appointment may also be offered.

If you have any questions that you weren’t able to ask at your appointment or thought about afterwards please contact one of the team members you saw. It is hard to remember everything, and it is ok to phone back to ask questions.
