For Tamariki & Rangatahi

I have had an unwanted sexual experience more than 7 days ago

We are so sorry that something has happened to you that was not okay.

If you haven’t already, tell a safe adult – you don’t have to deal with this on your own. Check out our Helpful Websites section for additional support options.

You might want to talk with the police; they will be able to talk you through your options and offer additional support.

Before your appointment

You have been referred to Te Puaruruhau because either yourself, your whānau, or someone else is worried someone may have hurt or harmed you. One of our clinical team will phone you or your caregiver/parent to arrange a day and time that fits in around you and your day. If you have any questions before your appointment, need help with getting here (ie. taxis that we can provide), or need to cancel or change the appointment day or time, please call 021 492 365. You can absolutely bring a support person with you. We can also arrange a crisis support person to be with you. We will spend at least a few minutes with you on your own as there are some personal and private questions you may be asked.

At your appointment

You will be seen by either a nurse, doctor or health social worker, or a combination of these team members. They will explain who they are and their roles, how the appointment might look, how long it might take, and give you a few options to help you decide on what you want for your health and well-being. They will talk about your confidentiality and the limits around this. You will spend at least a few minutes on your own with one of these people as there are some personal and private questions you may be asked. Some of the things that might be offered may be a blood test, sexual health screening and education, contraception information, physical examination, ACC claim and clinical photography. If you have any health worries about your body please share these with the medical team. We have kitchen facilities and kai available.

After your appointment

If you had anything sent off to the lab for testing, the nurse will contact you in a few days after your appointment to give you these results. A follow up appointment may also be offered. If you have any questions that you weren’t able to ask at your appointment or thought about afterwards please contact one of the team members you saw.

Mātau ā-wheako

“It took forever to tell, I don’t think I wanted it to be true, I didn’t want anyone to know or feel sorry for me, and I didn’t want to answer a hundred questions.  I didn’t realise how much it was on my mind until then, it was like a big weight was lifted.  It didn’t make it unhappen but the support I got made me stronger again.  No one should go through this by themselves.  I even talk with a counsellor now, I am doing good.  You don’t have to go to court or do anything you don’t want, everyone is on your side.”
